Thousand participants showed their care for the coastal environment in the celebration of the 2017 International Coastal Cleanup held at the Las Piñas-Parañaque Critical Habitat and Ecotourism Area (LPPCHEA) on September 16, 2017. The said activity was spearheaded by the DENR-NCR with the assistance from the Biodiversity Management Bureau (BMB) and was actively participated by different partner agencies, attached bureaus, DENR offices, stakeholders, LGUs, SUCs and other stakeholders.
The International Coastal Cleanup is the largest volunteer effort for ocean’s health. Held annually every third Saturday of September, people around the world gather on beaches, coasts, rivers, waterways and underwater dive sites to remove trash and record information on the debris collected.
Meanwhile, the RBCO as a participant and partner to the 2017 ICC was tasked to coordinate with the Manila Bay Sunset Partnership Program Inc., Robinsons Land Corporation (RLC) and Landbank of the Philippines (LBP) volunteers in the conduct of the said activity.
Based from the results consolidated by the DENR-NCR, a total of 2,067 volunteers participated the event which covers 2,000 km cleanup area. In connection, there is an estimated 240,145 pieces of wastes/trash collected in the site having plastics with the greatest number followed by stypor/foam waste materials.
